| UTE TRIBAL PARK RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION |
|
Towaoc, CO The Ute Tribal Park, located in Southwestern Colorado, was recognized
in the October, 20th Anniversary Issue of National Geographic Traveler as
part of their special feature "The New Grand Tour - Around the World in 80
Places." The article highlighted 80 different locations in the Americas, Africa,
Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific Realm to visit on an around-the-world
tour.
Starting in Alaska and ending up in the South Polar waters, this modern day Phileas Fogg adventure is considered the "ultimate travel experience," according to National Geographic Traveler. Only seven of the eighty world stops were located in the United States, and the Ute Mountain Tribal Park was one of them.
The Tribal Park was selected because it is "a little-known gem tucked into
the southwestern corner of Colorado." Located on the "other side" of Mesa
Verde National Park, the Tribal Park has been set aside to preserve Ancestral
Puebloan cliff dwellings in a remote, pristine environment. Four cliff dwellings
are included in their full-day tour led by a Ute tribal member. By far the
most spectacular is Eagle's Nest, reached by climbing a 30-foot ladder and
crawling along a ledge located high above the canyon floor. Ancestral Puebloan
and historic Ute rock art are found in the park and special tours to other
remote areas of the park are also available.
